Suspects arrested in Bound Brook Labor-Day robbery, assault

BOUND BROOK, NJ -- Law enforcement officials arrested a 21-year-old Bound Brook resident and a 17-year-old Newark male juvenile in the attempted armed robbery and assault of a 27-year-old Bound Brook resident that occurred during the evening hours on Labor Day, Monday, September 7.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's Office identified one of the suspects as Ashley N. Thorpe, of Hamilton Street in Bound Brook. The Newark juvenile, of Stuyvesant Avenue, is only identified by the initials "A.E."

County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest gave the following account of the incidents and allegations surrounding the case:

On September 7, at about 10:17 p.m. officers from the Bound Brook Police Department were dispatched to the area of East Second Street for a report of an attempted robbery with a handgun. Upon arrival, police officers encountered the victim who reported that he was assaulted by two individuals who used a black handgun and were demanding money.
The victim stated that one of the suspects began assaulting him by striking him in the face with the handgun while demanding money. While the victim was being assaulted he was able to slap the gun away from the suspect and fled to a nearby residence where he was aided by two residents until police arrived.
Both suspects fled from the scene. The victim and the two resident witnesses provided police with a description of the assailants.
Responding Bound Brook Police Officers began to canvass the area for the suspects. Officers contacted detectives from the Bound Brook Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Squad who responded to assist in the investigation of the attempted armed robbery.
The Somerset County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit was also contacted and responded with a tracking dog. As a result of the canvass, officers tracked the suspects to a residence on Hamilton Street in Bound Brook. The Sheriff's Department tracking K-9 was utilized and followed a scent from the crime scene to the porch at a Hamilton Street residence.
Bound Brook Police maintained a perimeter of the residence and were assisted by back-up units from the South Bound Brook Police Department and the Middlesex Borough Police Department. Two subjects matching the suspects' description exited the residence and were detained. Both were subsequently identified by the victim and the witnesses as the assailants.
Officers were also successful in locating the weapon that is believed to have been used in the assault which is an imitation black semi-automatic handgun.
Both defendants were charged with first-degree armed robbery, and second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. Defendant Thorpe was held at the Somerset County Jail with bail to be set, while the juvenile defendant was held at the Middlesex County Youth Detention Center.
Prosecutor Forrest stated that detectives are continuing the investigation and are attempting to determine if the defendants are involved in any other unsolved armed robberies in Bound Brook or surrounding jurisdictions.
