FBI, local police search property for missing woman

PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Local sheriff's officials and the FBI are searching for a southeast Missouri woman missing for 33 years in Perry County.

Officials are searching 114 acre property beyond a closed road near the Mississippi River for the remains of Geneva Adams.

The mother of 10 from Herculaneum was 53 when she was last seen July 25, 1976.

She's still classified as a missing person, but her family insists she was killed.

Herculaneum Police Chief Chris Pigg says cadaver dogs led them to an area where they are now digging. A cadaver dog hit on a scent about a month ago.

Pigg says Adams was last seen in the company of a man named Jimmy Lee Mills who used to visit the property, but Pigg would not say if Mills is a person of interest.

"She was last seen at the Artesian Bar in Herculaneum," Pigg said. "Information has led us to this farm in Perry County. Working with the Sheriff Gary Schaaf of Perry County. We have called for assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help us in the technical aspect of looking for any remains that we might find."

Investigators with the FBI, Highway Patrol, Perry County Sheriff's Department are helping the Herculaneum Police Department excavate the property. A team of archeologists, forensic scientists, and geologists are also helping in the search.

"It's been a culmination of a lot of information over the years. And then we finally used the cadaver dogs and were able to pinpoint a location," Pigg said.

"It may have ended up here, doesn't mean it started here," said Perry County Sheriff's Gary Schaaf. "Somebody's going to have to eventually solve this and hopefully prosecute the guilty party and we want to assist in that."

The owner of the property is a former sheriff's deputy and fully cooperating with the investigation. The sheriff says the owner of the property is not a suspect in the case.

There will be a guard at the excavation site throughout the night. Investigators are expected to be back on the property early Thursday morning.
