Drug dogs sniff out alleged cannabis stash

POLICE sniffer dogs have allegedly uncovered an $8000 stash of cannabis hidden in the engine bay of a car at a road block in the Territory.

The Alice Springs-based police dog operation unit detected the drug in 174 deal bags under the bonnet when stopping the car as part of a joint initiative with NT and WA Police targeting substance abuse traffickers last month.

The operation was launched on the roads leading to the Western Australian community of Wingellina - near the junction of the NT, South Australia and WA borders - on the weekend of a large concert being held in the community.

Police also tipped out eight litres of alcohol and seized 20 litres of petrol and one firearm.
