2 killed in unrelated Charlotte shootings

A 53-year-old grandfather and a 24-year-old man who'd just gotten into a fight were shot dead less than an hour apart Friday in unrelated killings.

The city has seen three homicides in two days, a troubling stretch during a year when killings are down by more than a third. Charlotte has seen 37 homicides so far this year. At this point in 2008, there were 56.

Around 10:30 p.m. Friday, 24-year-old Jimmy Deshawn Sanderlin was fatally shot at the Greenbryre Apartments, a complex where there also was a homicide in January 2008.

Police said that Sanderlin got into a fight with the man eventually charged with shooting him. Witnesses heard several gunshots before a man fled the scene in a car. Paramedics took Sanderlin to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died.

Early Saturday, officers arrested Corey Douglas Grant, 27, of Charlotte, and charged him with murder in connection with Sanderlin's death.

Sanderlin's family described him as a loving father who doted on his 2-year-old son, Alex. Sanderlin grew up in Eastern North Carolina near Elizabeth City and moved to the apartment complex just off Sharon Amity Road this year, looking for a job in construction.

“He came here for a new atmosphere,” said his mother, Patricia Peoples. “He worked in construction. He did odd jobs too, picking up scrap. He was going to make some money.”

About an hour after Sanderlin was shot, several men burst through the front door of a home on Whitehall Drive in west Charlotte, fatally shooting Manuel Mosqueda-Savedra. He was lying on the floor and pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

Officers set up a perimeter and used a police helicopter and search dogs to try to locate suspects, but no one had been apprehended. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

No one answered the door at the one-story building brick home near Harding High School in west Charlotte.

The shooting capped a particularly violent week on the Wilkinson Boulevard corridor, which saw two fatal shootings and the beating of a Wal-Mart security guard in a four-day period beginning Tuesday.

On Thursday, a 25-year-old man was gunned down during a robbery at a strip club on Little Rock Road, just off Wilkinson. Police caught two suspects during a chase that started after someone ran out the back door of the club and flagged down an officer conducting a traffic stop.

Early Tuesday morning, a 76-year-old security guard at Wal-Mart was found beaten a few blocks away from the store, his work truck missing. A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with assault in that case. WCNC contributed.
