HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut is among several states turning to dogs to help them find cell phones smuggled into state prisons.

Connecticut, Virginia and Maryland are using phone-sniffing dogs to find the contraband devices. Authorities say the dogs are a deterrent, making prisoners think twice about trying to smuggle a phone inside.

Prison officials say cell phones are a security risk, and that some are used by prisoners to direct gangs, narcotics activity or financial transactions.

Connecticut Corrections Commissioner Theresa Lantz calls the dogs a low-tech solution to a high-tech problem.
